In August of 2001 Philadelphia became the first city in the U.S. with a special office to address the important issues of violence and victimization in the city’s public schools.

The Office of Safe Schools Advocate monitors Philadelphia School District’s compliance with Pennsylvania’s Safe Schools Act, especially accurate reporting of violent incidents and effective intervention to maintain school discipline and classroom safety.

The Safe Schools Advocate assists students and parents, staff and faculty, affected by school violence. The Advocate advises victims, accompanies them to hearings or meetings with school administrators, and intercedes on their behalf with the District Attorney’s Office.

Sometimes violence can occur—you may be
a victim of threats, harassment, robbery, or assault—not only on school grounds, but
for reasons related to problems at school.

If you or a family member are a victim of
crime, you should notify the police as well
as the school authorities.
